Last week the Big Rig rolled out of it’s final stop in Northern California, Merced, and headed south for sunny Los Angeles.

Leaving was bittersweet as the Big Rig received an overwhelmingly positive response from the Merced community. We had a range of students from elementary to high school join us to learn their way around the kitchen. Even the mayor of Merced, Stan Thurston, joined us for a class! There was so much interest in our classes that they were entirely booked up by the end of our first week. Thanks for all your support Merced!

Nearly 700 of our approximately 930 participants were students ranging from elementary school all the way through high school. One teacher told us, “Thank you so much for the wonderful experience on the JOFF Big Rig! We had a great time learning about making a healthier alternative to boxed pancakes. The students enjoyed the opportunity to make fruit salad with the yogurt/honey dressing. I am so glad that your foundation came to Merced. Thank you for helping to make our community a healthier place.” The Big Rig is a great place for students to learn their way around the kitchen and prepare for a healthier future.

The Big Rig isn’t just for kids though - everyone can learn something new. One participant in Merced told us, “What I love about my Big Rig cooking class is the way the instructor and champions talked about the recipes. They took the intimidation and fear out of the recipes and offered practical tips that I think appealed to every, regardless of how comfortable they were in the kitchen before arriving at class.” It’s great to hear that we are successful in getting people excited about cooking and giving them the tools to be great home cooks. Another participant wrote, “Wonderful for those of us who've never cooked, who are just starting, or are self-taught and wanting to expand those horizons!” It’s never too late to learn new skills that will impact your health and happiness.

In Los Angeles, classes will take place at Martin Luther King Jr. Outpatient Center in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Learn to Teach begins in Los Angeles on March 28th and classes for the public will begin on April 8th. We’re looking forward to working with some local groups including some community groups of MLK Outpatient Center and other local communities as well as Barack Obama Charter School. We hope that you will come visit us, too!
